General comments |
-The goal of this textbook seems to learn the basic chords (I, V7, IV) in C major, G major, F major, and D major, and to acquire a basic sense of harmony. The composition of this volume is as follows: (1) Learn the scale of the major key (2) Learn the basic chords of the major key (3) Based on (1) and (2), practice with the song in the major key. In vol.1, the accompaniment of chords was not dealt with, and as a exercise, the accompaniment of double note is. This volume has few new matters, and the accompaniment pattern is almost the same, so it may be less interesting. It can be said to be an extension of vol.1 for learning chord accompaniment. Overall, there is no significant increase in difficulty from vol.1, so you may not feel “I’m getting good at!!”. No problem, by the time you finish this volume, you’re definitely improving. -While focusing on the chord accompaniment exercise of left hand, the appeal of this volume is that some songs by left hand melody are contained. Aim for a hand that can “sing” as much as the right hand. |
Recommend for concert / recital |
【ODE TO JOY】 – Very famous and arrangement is also good. – Since there is a range of strength and weakness, it is easy to express dynamics. 【TOY BUGLE】 – The mood changes in the middle part, so it is well organized as a song. 【CHIAPENECAS】 – A song that is fun to play and listen to. 【MARCH OF THE CINNAMON BEAR】 – If you can feel well with your left hand, it will be a wonderful song with a melody in the low range. 【TURKEY IN THE STRAW】 – It’s easy to play and it sounds great. – The composition of the song is well organized with changes. |

BLUE COWBOY | A2 | ♫ |
The sound changed by the accidentals is reminiscent of blues. Thus is it a blue cowboy? |
TWO MOODS | A2 | ♫ |
Learn dotted half notes and dotted quarter notes. As it is stated that you practice while counting beats as 1, 2, 3, and 4, this practice makes it easy to understand the lag in dots. At first, it may not be counted well (it may be confusing due to lag), so in that case, count it for your students. |
MELODY | A2 | ♫ |
From this volume, the explanation of the famous composer is described, and here there is a little explanation about the original composer Mozart. The first movement of Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K.331, is the original song (the third movement is the famous “Turkish March”). Be sure to separate the phrases at the slur breaks, as this is a good practice for expressing phrases. Use your hands and arms to express the phrase clearly. |

HAPPY TIMES | A2 | ♫ |
The melody on the right is a scale practice. Let’s learn the chord progression. |
SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER | A2 | ♫ |
An accompaniment composed of basic chord progressions. Be careful how you use your wrists and arms at the beginning and end of the slur so that you can sing long phrases with your right hand. |
Scaling in G Major | A2 | ♫ |
With the correct fingering. Let’s assume the position of the finger when playing ♯. Before you start playing, adjust the position of your hand slightly forward. |
RISE AND SHINE | A2 | ♫ |
Dal Segno will appear, so be careful where you return. Check the order of the measures before you start playing. Learn the basic chord progressions in G major. The chords are extended to a longer length (3 beats), so relax your arms immediately after hitting the keys. |
JINGLE BELLS | A2 | ♫ |
Play chords with staccato. Relax your arm and bounce to hit the key. Firmly solidify your fingertips, palms, and insteps to support your arms. |
ODE TO JOY | A2 | ♫ |
Famous song. Let’s play with a dignified and generous f. By gradually lowering the volume of the 3rd mp and gradually crescendo it, the 4th f can also be played more effectively. |
Scaling in F Major | A2 | ♫ |
Note that the timing of finger passing is different between C major and G major. |
TOY BUGLE | A2 | ♫ |
Clearly play the contrast between slur and staccato. |
COPY CAT | A2 | ♫ |
Although there is a song title, this is exactly an etude in F major. Play the scale of your left hand as smoothly as your right hand. |
CHIAPENECAS | A2 | ♫ |
The original title “Chiapanecas” is a folk song that originated in southern Mexico. Dance in a light triple time. You can imagine the sound of clapping in the accented notes. |
MELODY (from Symphony No.6) | A2 | ♫ |
Arrangement of the melody excerpted from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6 1st movement. I think it’s a simple and good arrangement. To get a feel for the atmosphere, please listen to the original song before playing it. The place where the accidental is attached and changes by a semitone is romantic. Let’s listen carefully and feel it. |
Technic | A2 | ♫ |
Composed by Czerny. Exercise for playing the melody with your left hand. Practice only your left hand first, and after you can relax and play, right hand together. |
Hymn Etude | A2 | ♫ |
Practice playing the melody of other voices (with the same hand as the hand playing the long note) while keeping the long note sound firmly. It’s a simple polyphonic song. As a starting point for practicing a song consisting of polyphonic parts, it is a good idea to practice playing one voice on the piano and singing the other. |
NIGHT RIDER | A2 | ♫ |
A song that expresses the running of a horse in Staccato. Don’t raise your hand too much, try to hit the keys from near the keyboard so that you can do staccato. |
G Major Scale Study / F Major Scale Study / Contrary Motion | A2 | ♫ |
Reviewing how to play the scale. |
HAIL TO THE QUEEN | A2 | ♫ |
Relax after hit the keys so as not to become a rough f. Staccato & descent points tend to be faster, so don’t hurry, let’s play in tempo. |
Six Eight Time | ♫ | |
First, count by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Next, try to catch it in two beats such as 1, (2), (3), 4, (5), (6). |
LOOBY LOO | A2 | ♫ |
Don’t let the chords on your left hand become too heavy. Keep rests firmly and take a breath. |
THE BEAR WENT OVER THE MOUNTAIN | A2 | ♫ |
Original song is the French folk song “Malbrough s’en va-t-en guerre”. |
Scaling in D Major | A2 | ♫ |
There are two ♯, so check the position of your hand before playing. |
WIENER SCHNITZEL | A2 | ♫ |
Note that the hands responsible for the melody will change in the first half and the second half. Especially in the second half, sing your left hand well and turn down the volume with your right hand. I don’t know what make this song title schnitzel, but imagine a hot schnitzel and play it happily. |
MARCH OF THE CINNAMON BEAR | A2 | ♫ |
This song is cute and I like it somehow. Completely right hand: accompaniment, left hand: melody, so turn down the volume of your right hand. Practice only your left hand until you can play smoothly. |
MUSETTE | A2 | ♫ |
From J.S. Bach “Anna Magdalena’s Notebook (Clavierbüchlein for Anna Magdalena Bach) – Musette in D Major, BWV Anh. 126”. I think it is a good arrangement without spoiling original mood. If a student whose hands are not very small, you may let them play the original song. |
ON TOP OF THE OLD SMOKY | A2 | ♫ |
It’s in D major, but try to express as it is described “Sadly”. I wonder if you should avoid playing the melody on my left hand with quick touch. Be careful of the volume of your right hand, and listen to the melody of your left hand. It is better that the chord on the right hand is played with a slight tenuto. |
EVENING STAR | A2 | ♫ |
Practice pedaling to connect phrases. If you step on the first note of the phrase immediately after hitting the key, the sound will not be muddy. |
PRAYER | A2 | ♫ | |
Align the sounds on the left and right while being aware of the crescendo (horizontal movement) of each phrase. If these are not aligned, play the same note several times with checking ①descent of keyboard ②touch points ③keystroke speed of each finger. As with “EVENING STAR”, the practice of pedals that connect phrases. |
THE SILVER BELL | A2 | ♫ |
The single note played with the left hand, jumping over the right hand, is as like the sound of a bell. When playing with hands crossing, do not force yourself to stretch your arms or move your hips on the chair, but use the movement of the center of gravity to play with your entire body. The sound may be a sober song for the movement… |
TURKEY IN THE STRAW | A2 | ♫ |
A concert song that you can play with what you learned in vol.1 and vol.2. It’s a attractive song that can be easily played because it doesn’t use elaborate accompaniment. Even if the sound is the same, if you use the keyboard widely from high to low, the song will be gorgeous. |
