佐藤 敏直
Toshinao Sato
1936-2002
Born in Yamagata, Japan. He began composing while majoring in electrical engineering at Keio University. He left behind works for various arrangements, including chamber music and orchestras, and has published many works for children since the 1970s. He was also involved in the field of music education, such as creating teaching materials for the Kawai Music School and training instructors.
His children’s works do not use the modern techniques seen in his other works, but many of his works have interesting Japanese-style melodies, rhythms, and sounds, and they are somehow nostalgic, familiar, but we feel fresh.
If you were to ask me what is a piece for children that has a Japanese flavor, I would recommend Sato’s work. The difficulty level is beginner to high, so it is easy to use for lessons and concerts. I recommend the pieces with a living creature theme. The creatures such as “crabs” and “praying mantises” are vividly depicted with sound.
