Yasushi Akutagawa
1925-1989
Born in Tokyo, he was the third son of novelist Ryunosuke Akutagawa. He studied at the Tokyo Music School (now Tokyo University of the Arts) under the guidance of Kunihiko Hashimoto, Akira Ifukube, Nobori Kaneko, and others. He made his debut in 1948 with 〈Trinita Sinfonica (Symphonic Trinity) 〉and graduated in 1949. At the age of 25, he composed 〈Music for Symphony Orchestra〉, which won a special prize at the NHK Broadcasting 25th Anniversary Orchestral Competition. His style is characterized by its clarity and strength. He has been active as a composer and conductor, representing Japan, and has left behind many masterpieces in the fields of film music, drama music, and children’s songs. He served as the music director of the amateur orchestra The New Symphony Orchestra and as the chairman of Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC), demonstrating his wide range of activities.
