Michio Mamiya
1929-
Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan. He has an unusual background in that he studied music on his own until entering university. While studying at Tokyo Music School (now Tokyo University of the Arts), he was already active, with his works being selected for music competitions. He has received numerous composition awards, including the Otaka Prize, the prize is given to Japanese composers, ) and is one of the leading composers in the Japanese music world. He has a strong interest in Japanese folk songs, and has carved out his own world by working on vocal and choral works that use Hayashi and Kakegoe. His interest in folk music was not only in Japan, but also in other countries, so some of his piano pieces use folk music (or music similar to folk music). He was active in a wide range of genres, including vocal works, piano works, orchestral works, opera, film music, etc.
