Nikolai Yakovlevich Myaskovsky
1881-1950

Born in 1881 in Norvogeorgievsk (now Modlin, Poland) near Warsaw. At the age of ten he moved to St. Petersburg. After completing his military service, he entered the Petersburg Conservatory in 1906. At the Conservatory, he produced several symphonies, overtures, and piano sonatas, embarking on a career as a composer. He was also classmates with Prokofiev and hit it off, becoming his lifelong friend. In contrast to Prokofiev, he remained in Russia and although he was sometimes criticized by the Russian authorities, he continued to work in Russia for the rest of his life, exploring his own musical direction.

Although Myaskovsky is by no means the main repertoire even in Russia, he served as a professor at the Moscow Conservatory and trained many talented composers. He is known as the leader of Kabalevsky, Khachaturian, Sheverin and others.

His cello concerto in C minor, Op. 66, is one of the most frequently performed, but he is also known for composing 27 symphonies during his lifetime. While based on a romantic style, the new sounds, gloomy colors, and endlessly undulating melodies, such as “This is Russian music,” are beautiful, which were managed through repeated trial and error under the repressive regime. In recent years, he has been re-evaluated, and is a composer whose repertoire of recordings such as vocal music, chamber music, and piano music is expanding.

[Q. What is your favorite song? ]

mezzopiano)Violin Sonata in F major, Op.70. Well this is beautiful. The first few bars as if it promised to be a masterpiece. Unexpected charm that appears everywhere. The moment when the key is changed is also thrilling. I say this every time I refer a violin piece (haha), but I want to play both the violin part and the piano part! When will it be? No, I will definitely play!
