overview
Composed in 1933.
This was incidental music to Jean Giraudoux’s theatrical work 《Intermezzo》.” Rumors circulate about a ghost in a certain town, and a female teacher, Isabelle, seems to go to see said ghost… As if linked to the ghost’s appearance, strange and mysterious things start happening in the village, and people get caught up in them… This is the story.
The subtitle “Pieces for Children” suggests that the pieces were composed to be easy enough for children to play. A light and simple collection of pieces, it’s perfect for an introduction to Poulenc.

1.Valse tyrolienneB2
The accompaniment has many leaps, but there are only a few patterns, so it is simple in structure. The slightly dissonant notes in the middle section are typical of Poulenc. The ff section is dramatic. The ups and downs of the melody played by the right hand are reminiscent of yodeling.
2.StaccatoB2
This piece has the atmosphere of a villagers happy dance or a scene from a slapstick comedy that happened in a village. In the middle part, the characters take turns speaking (singing). Try to add intonation and think about how to use pauses.
